After massive struggles that saw Kaizer Chiefs end the 2023/24 season 10th, their worst-ever finish in the Premier Soccer League era, the management opted to make massive changes, especially in the technical team.
Many names were linked to the Amakhosi coaching job, including Pitso Mosimane who was jobless after leaving Abha.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach had even sent a signal to the Soweto giants indicating he was ready for the job.
However, the decision-makers went for Nasreddine Nabi who had a good experience with Young Africans and a relatively good campaign with AS FAR Rabat.
Esteghlal Since taking over at Chiefs, Nabi has struggled to make an impact; the team has managed three wins, as many draws, and three losses that have seen them drop to the ninth place on the Premier Soccer League table.
The Glamour Boys further failed to deliver on the Carling Knockout, crashing out in the quarter-final stage after a heavy 4-0 loss against eventual finalists Mamelodi Sundowns.
In his recent interview, Nabi said he needs quality players to help him achieve his objectives at the club.
In contrast to Nabi, Pitso Mosimane is seemingly getting it right at the Persian Gulf Pro League outfit Esteghlal FC. After a poor start, the team is currently on a seven-match unbeaten run.
Former Kaizer Chiefs attacker Junior Khanye insists Nabi started his reign at Chiefs on the wrong footing. He went on to explain why Mosimane was the ideal man for the Glamour Boys.
GOAL GFX"Chiefs made a mistake by going to North Africa and getting Nabi as the new coach. They should have hired coach Pitso, who was available and did not have a job then,” the former winger said as quoted by Sunday World.
“I saw during the off-season when Nabi took the team to Turkey for training – that’s an old-fashioned way of doing things. He should have arranged to play a few friendly matches so that he could see his players and to work on combinations. That was going to show him what he had and where he lacked. The players he has are not good enough and they have been there for the last five years or so.
"Playing friendly matches was going to help him sign players that he wants. But now, even if the club gave him money, he is going to bring players that he wants and not players who can fit into the Chiefs identity and way of playing," Khanye continued.
"Pitso was a free agent, and we all know his record. The Mamelodi Sundowns we are seeing today is because of Pitso’s hard work and vision. The Chiefs project is the kind of assignment that brings the best out of him.
"He loves challenges because he is a winner. So, if you look at the current results and league table, Chiefs made a mistake by bringing Nabi," he concluded.
With the transfer window set to open on January 1, Chiefs are expected to sign a few quality players to boost their squad.
It will be interesting to see who they will bring on board to help them at least challenge for the Nedbank Cup.
The Glamour Boys have gone nine seasons without tasting silverware.
