    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs are arguably the most popular team in South Africa, owing to their rich heritage and tradition.

However, they have struggled to make an impact in the last 10 years, although they ended their drought by winning the Nedbank Cup last season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the 2023/24 season, the Glamour Boys finished 10th in the Premier Soccer League, which remains their worst position ever.

Coach Nasreddine Nabi helped them to a ninth-place finish in his debut campaign a year ago.

Basically, the Soweto giants have not played in the MTN8 for two consecutive editions, which is a loss to the competition according to club legend Fabian McCarthy.

    WHAT MCCARTHY SAID

“You see, I’m even getting goosebumps; Chiefs are missing out, the competition MTN8 is missing Chiefs," he told iDiski Times.

"For me, it’s the fans of Amakhosi that I’m feeling are missing out. You’ve seen them at midweek games where you can easily get 10,000 plus, irrespective of where in the country they play. So, I’m feeling it for the fans.

“But I’m saying to the current crop of Chiefs players, we want to see you next season in the MTN8," McCarthy continued.

"I’m not going to talk about the first few games, but there’s a chance [of finishing in the top positions].

"There are a lot of positive things happening in the Chiefs camp; things are falling into place now.

“I wish them all the best for the season. Like you said, Chiefs are missing out, and the competition misses Chiefs, but I’m feeling more for the fans of Amakhosi, because, you know, when they come out, they go all out," he concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

This season, Chiefs have started the campaign well, collecting 13 points in the five PSL matches they have played.

They are the only team that hasn't conceded, and the fans hope they can go all the way and end Mamelodi Sundowns' dominance.
