    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates appointed Jose Riveiro as their head coach in the 2022/23 season.

The Spaniard has enjoyed ample time at the club, hitting greater heights with the current crop of players.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Spaniard has won five major trophies with Pirates - three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup crowns.

Bucs have finished further behind Sundwons in the last two Premier Soccer League seasons and are aiming at going a step further in the ongoing campaign to end Masandawana's dominance.

Just recently, the Spaniard - who is in the Nedbank Cup semi-final and Caf Champions League quarter-final- became the all-time longest-serving coach in the club's PSL history by clocking 120 matches, one more than Ruud Krol.

Despite the many achievements within three years, Riveiro has not committed his future to Bucs.

    WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

"I think we have to focus on the next game, this is a press conference about the game against Mamelodi Sundowns, it's not a personal interview to talk about my future or how important whatever is coming is going to be for me," he responded when asked about his contract that expires at the end of the season.

"It's about Orlando Pirates, it's about having an important game in two days, trying to get ready after three tough games in a row since we played in Port Elizabeth [Gqeberha] until today, with good performances, good results and the possibility of finding ourselves in a cup semi-final again.

"So I think there are a lot of things to talk about the team and what's coming for them, and I think whether Riveiro is going to be or not going to be, or the league or not the league, I think it's not the time to talk about it, sorry," Riveiro concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Before his contract expires, Riveiro hopes to be the most successful Pirates coach by winning the PSL and the Caf Champions League titles.

However, to achieve that, the Soweto giants have to work on their consistency on the pitch.
