    WHAT HAPPENED?

Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo made a name at Marumo Gallants before Orlando Pirates signed him.

He has been playing for the Buccaneers since the 2022-23 season, but has struggled to command a starting berth.

Coach Jose Riveiro has been using him sparingly.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the 2024-25 season, Ndlondlo played just six Premier Soccer League games owing to injuries and fierce competition.

Coach Dan Malesela believes the 29-year-old can be more effective when played in a more advanced role.

The former Pirates defender insists Ndlondlo can deliver when he has the freedom to create and score goals.

    WHAT MALESELA SAID

"[Ndlondlo should not be playing as an eight or six, he needs to be utilised as a 10," he told KickOff.

"In that number 10 role, he is significantly better and more effective at creating and scoring goals.

“That’s where Ndlondlo thrived when he started at Pirates, so it’s puzzling why they moved him," Malesela continued.

"It saddens me when I see a player I’ve coached fall off the radar, and I hope Tshepo does not have to experience the same fate.

“Yes, Tshepo can play as a centre-back, but his natural position is right-back. Given his youth, I believe he has the potential to graduate to the centre-back position in the future," he concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

At 29, Ndlondlo is at his peak, meaning he can still deliver for any team he plays for.

It is not yet clear whether he will be at Pirates next season, but whichever the case, he should be tried in the number 10 role.
