How Kaizer Chiefs have fared in the early stages of the 2023/24 season

Kaizer Chiefs are on a mission to end what has been a period to forget for the club in recent years, where success appears to have completely deserted them.

They are not doing a great job at the moment, however, as they continue to struggle to bring back the glory days.

Amakhosi have gone from being the "Cup Kings" of Mzansi football to a sleeping giant that is desperate for a change in fortunes.

All their efforts have so far been fruitless and the club is beginning to run out of options with every season that goes by without silverware.

    Was Ntseki the right choice?

In their latest attempt to bring the club where it belongs, the Chiefs hierarchy turned to the former Bafana Bafana.

His elevation to head coach came as somewhat of a surprise to the Chiefs faithful who were expecting a certain Nasredine Nabi to take over the reins from the demoted Arthur Zwane.

Needless to say, Ntseki had a tough task ahead of him trying to endear himself to the Chiefs faithful who appeared opposed to his appointment from the word go.

The former African Warriors coach felt the wrath of the Chiefs fans early on as they showed their frustrations after a disappointing start to the season.

It didn’t help that Ntseki came in as a relatively unproven coach in the PSL - this being his first job in the local elite league.

A disappointing start to the season

Ntseki's hasn’t sparked an immediate turnaround in fortunes for Chiefs, in fact, it has instead looked like more of the same old as far as results are concerned.

The signs were not promising even from pre-season where the Glamour Boys suffered two defeats to Tanzania's Young Africans and Township Rollers from Botswana.

Things took a turn for the worst when Amakhosi went two games winless at the start of the Premier Soccer League.

Their league form has not improved a great deal since then, currently 11 points adrift of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns who have a game in hand.

It is a campaign they have also missed out on the MTN8 which means there's one less trophy available for Amakhosi in their bid to end their trophy drought.

    Good signings, but...

In recent seasons, Amakhosi have been making mistakes in the transfer market, buying players who have had little impact at the club.

This season, Chiefs signed no less than nine players but there has been little improvement in performance.

The likes of Ranga Chivaviro, Jasond Gonzalez, Tebogo Potsane and Given Msimango are just some of the new signings who have struggled this season.

It seems Ntseki is struggling to get the new players gelling with the rest of the Chiefs squad with the team yet to fire on all cylinders.

Lengthy trophy drought continues, for now

The fact that Chiefs have gone eight seasons without lifting any silverware is the biggest source of pressure for all at the club.

Chiefs, prior to their recent struggles, had made a name for themselves as one of the most efficient teams in Mzansi, winning a number of trophies.

The club currently finds itself in unfamiliar territory and it's demanding supporters are quickly running out of patience.

The MTN8, recently won by arch rivals Orlando Pirates, means Chiefs now only have the PSL, Carling Knockout Cup and Nedbank Cup to try and end the drought.

And it doesn’t look good in the league where Sundowns already look like champions in waiting, merely eight matches into the season.

It's not all doom and gloom

Many of the Chiefs supporters would be forgiven for thinking that all is doom and gloom given their side's start to the season, but really it isn't.

Although results have suggested otherwise, Chiefs have made some progress this season and have been better on the eye.

That, though, counts for little when there are no trophies to show for it or when the PSL log standings don't reflect it.

However, Ntseki's side have shown some positives signs here and there and it's a just a pity that consistency has eluded them.
