    THE BIGGER PICTURE

On Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs play Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout quarter-final game that will be staged at the FNB Stadium.

The Premier Soccer League defending champions defeated Golden Arrows 5-0 to advance while Amakhosi claimed a 4-0 win over SuperSport United.

Interestingly, the two sides met in the PSL fixture recently at the aforementioned venue and the Brazilians controversially won 2-1. Amakhosi will be aiming to avenge the loss as well.

Polokwane coach Phuti Mohafe has explained how his side managed to beat Downs, a tactic which might help Chiefs in the forthcoming meeting.

    WHAT MOHAFE SAID

"The things is [Polokwane] can't match [Downs] in terms of possession, I think what we [did] was to manage those spaces in-between the defense and the spaces between the midfield," the tactician stated.

"Whereby [Marcello] Allende and [Tashreeq] Matthews were operating, as well as the spaces that was used by [Thapelo] Morena on the side as well as the one that was used by [Asekho] Tiwani on the other side.

"So, we managed that perfectly well. We forced them to go wide but we set the traps that when they go wide, the moment they receive the ball, they must make sure that we pounce on them," Mohafe continued.

"We blocked whatever that they throw at us, and we go on counterattacks. We also used the set pieces; hence we scored from one, and that is the only way that as Polokwane City we do well against Sundowns."

    WHAT NEXT?

Sundowns were eliminated from the MTN8 by Stellelnbosch in the semi-final, and wouldn't want to suffer the same fate in the Carling Knockout.

Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi will be aiming at ending the Soweto Giant's winless run against the Brazilians. The last time the Glamour Boys defeated Masandawana was in April 2021.
