Harry Kane told Bundesliga triumph was 'no great achievement' as England legend Michael Owen calls striker out for decision to join Bayern Munich

Owen was appearing on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United striker spoke about the Three Lions captain gave and his thoughts on the 32-year-old's decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur for the Bundesliga in 2023. Kane won the title with Bayern in his second season at the club and has been linked with a return to the Premier League at a later stage in his career.

Kane opted for trophies over individual success in his home country when he swapped Spurs for Munich in a €100 million (£86m/$116m) move two years ago. Despite already being within touching distance of Alan Shearer's Premier League goal-scoring record, Kane chose to begin a new path and has continued his outstanding scoring exploits in Germany, netting 65 times in 65 Bundesliga games for the Bavarian giants. Owen and Ferdinand agreed that Kane would have been a game-changer had he signed for Manchester United in place of Bayern.

Owen said: "Well, I mean, Harry Kane, I think, is just lethal. I think he's a brilliant finisher. A brilliant finisher. I disagreed with him going to Germany. I was outspoken about that. I still think he was nuts."

Ferdinand responded: "Even though he won the league?"

Owen replied: "Mate! And? You're on the verge of being the all-time Premier League goal-scorer. You've got kids that are all in school. I mean, I just couldn't see it. I don't see it. And if you're that desperate to win something, then, you know, do another year and then go to a... But to go and just win, it's like, you know, if you go up and move to Celtic and win the league, are you like, oh yeah, I know I changed that. You win every year, but there's no great achievement in that. A great achievement would have been being the top goal-scorer ever in the Premier League. That would have been unbelievable and he could have won things along the way."

Though a Premier League return could be on the cards someday, Kane's focus this year will be looking to win the Champions League in addition to defending the Bundesliga title with Bayern. He will then lead England to the 2026 World Cup next summer, before the true decision will arise over whether he wants to listen to Owen's advice and go after the goal-scoring record back in his home country as he enters the twilight of his career.
