George Lebese tears into Nasreddine Nabi's Kaizer Chiefs for overburdening Mduduzi Shabalala - 'The weight is too much for him'

Mduduzi Shabalala has established himself as a regular starter for Kaizer Chiefs, making the lineup in all their nine games across all competitions this season.

Former Amakhosi midfielder George Lebese, however, feels the Soweto giants are overburdening Shabalala.

“I like Shabalala. One of the few players I spoke with,” said Lebese as per FARPost. 

“But the difference now at Chiefs is we had you guys [Josta Dladla] with experience. You come in there. I would be on the bench for you, and you would tell me: ‘Look for you to improve, you must bench me’. They [current Chiefs youngsters] don’t have that. 

“It is all youngsters, and the weight is too much for him [Mdu Shabalala] alone to [carry the team]. We expect him to win the games, and there’s where I feel [experience is needed].”

What places Shabalala's development in the spotlight is that some players who burst onto the scene at the same time as him or later are already in the Bafana Bafana fold.

These include Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thapelo Maseko and Orlando Pirates Relebohile MKofokeng who are now international players.

However, it looks promising for Shabalala this season as he is regarded as one of Chiefs' top performers with three league goals in seven matches.

With Lebese convinced that the weight of expectations is too much Shabalala, there are other Amakhosi youngsters who are also seeking guidance this season.

As the season progresses, the likes of Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi are also expected to be top performers.
