    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates played Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby assignment staged at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Apart from the bragging rights, both teams needed maximum points to get close to their set objectives.

Bucs wanted to sustain their race for the Premier Soccer League title while Chiefs needed a win to push for the top positions and get back their confidence.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

It seemed like the game was destined for a goalless draw until a controversial penalty was handed to Pirates by referee Masixole Bambiso.

Njabulo Blom looked to tag back Relebohile Mofokeng but the latter was determined to stay on his feet before forcing Bruce Bvuma to a fine save.

However, the Amakhosi players were shocked to see the referee pointing to the penalty spot and Patrick Maswanganyi played a cheeky penalty past the keeper to win the game in favour of Bucs.

Former Chiefs winger Junior Khanye believes the referee should not have awarded the Buccaneers the penalty because it was soft.

    WHAT KHANYE SAID

“But truly speaking ahead of this game I was confident that Pirates was going to win," he told iDiski Times.

"That’s why I don’t have a problem when they have won today because they were a better team in terms of play compared to Kaizer Chiefs.

“Even the chances they got were better compared to Kaizer Chiefs. But I think they didn’t play to their strength today that’s the reason why you can feel the penalty was not supposed to be there," Khanye continued.

“I mean they shouldn’t have scored in that fashion but because of the quality Pirates has, the penalty stood.”

    WHAT NEXT?

Chiefs were definitely disappointed with the outcome of the Soweto Derby after they had given everything to get a positive outcome.

They will now need to forget the loss and focus on Tuesday's assignment against AmaZulu.

All three signings - Thabo Cele, Tashreeq Morris and Glody Lilepo might be given their full debut.
