    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Orlando Pirates head coach Augusto Palacios has explained why the Premier Soccer League side should retain Mandla Ncikazi.

Ncikazi is in charge for now after Jose Riveiro was granted an early leave since his departure had already been confirmed.

Palacios argues that keeping Ncikazi will be key for continuity, as he has been part of Pirates for a long time.

    WHAT PALACIOS SAID

"Mandla is currently part of the Orlando Pirates setup, and he was previously the head coach as well. Therefore, it's a case of continuity," Palacios told KickOff.

"He understands the strategies that were implemented under the previous coach and is prepared to follow in those exact footsteps," he added.

"I do not believe that the head coach's departure will negatively impact the team in the remaining games. I think he has the necessary experience now."

    WHAT IS MORE

Another reason that convinces Palacios as to why Ncikazi is a key figure for Pirates is the role he played under Riveiro.

"Remember, Ncikazi was always involved, participating and contributing during Riveiro's training sessions, team talks, and travels," Palacios stated.

"Ncikazi is not new to this situation. If the chairman wants to retain him, I am confident he can handle any challenges that may arise. This is not a preseason or a new season; it’s the same ongoing season from Riveiro. Therefore, it should not be difficult due to the continuity," he added.

"Ncikazi just needs to embrace the challenge, go with the flow, and avoid making drastic changes. He has the experience to navigate this. You can’t change anything at this stage of the season."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pirates are set to have a new head coach next season, and what is on many people's minds is whether the club will appoint an entirely new technical bench.

If Ncikazi is retained, that will signal continuity, which, according to Palacios, is key for the club going forward.

Riveiro spent three seasons with the Sea Robbers and won five titles, which means he has already raised the bar high for his successor.

    WHAT NEXT FOR NCIKAZI?

As he takes charge of the remaining games, he would be happy to see that he wins maximum points, although he started with a 1-1 draw against TS Galaxy.

There are three games to go for Ncikazi and Pirates: matches against SuperSport United, AmaZulu, and Magesi FC.
