<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/news/ex-kaizer-chiefs-coach-ertugral-explains-why-he-gave-khune-an-early-chance-in-his-career/blteeaa1faad24e6b20" target="_blank">Muhsin Ertugral gave a then-20-year-old Itumeleng Khune his Premier Soccer League debut</a> in 2007 in the 1-1 draw with Jomo Cosmos at Kings Park Stadium.Since then, the goalkeeper established himself as a Bafana number-one and one of the best custodians ever witnessed in South Africa.But as he nears retirement, a dark spot marked his season after he was suspended and stripped the Chiefs armband for turning up for duty while drunk.Ertugral, however, is not happy about the way Chiefs handled the Khune situation.

WHAT HAPPENED?

“It was sad for me to see. You don’t treat a player in that capacity [like that],” Ertugral told<a href="https://www.idiskitimes.co.za/dstv-premiership/ertugral-questions-chiefs-over-khune-treatment/" target="_blank"> iDiski Times</a>.“In his most difficult times, he needs to have something to hold on to. And I couldn’t see that by Kaizer Chiefs."I mean, I can only say that now from the outside, I’m not involved, I don’t want to trigger negativity, but it could have helped him," the ex-Amakhosi continued.“It was a couple of years ago, the same story. And I’ve made it publicly, I remember that when I said publicly out, they should know there is only one Itu, there is no second Itu and there will never be a second Itu coming up in the next 50 years.“So for Kaizer Chiefs at that time, if I was in charge, I’d always try to protect my players, and a couple of things don’t get out. You don’t need to put certain things out in the public. You [don’t] need to do that," he said.“I mean, do you think that Jabu Pule was easy? Do you think that Doctor Khumalo was easy? Do you think Thabo Mooki was easy? Do you think that Arthur Zwane and Cyril Nzama were always easy? But they’re unbelievable artists, unbelievable,” he added.

WHAT ERTUGRAL SAID

As Khune nears the end of his contract, no goalkeeper has so far been mentioned as a possible long-term replacement for the veteran stopper.At 28, Bruce Bvuma seems to still have more time in his club career while 29-year-old Brandon Petersen has fallen below the pecking order after a series of mistakes.<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/nwabali-transfer-hope-for-kaizer-chiefs-nigeria-goalkeeper-opens-up-on-reported-qpr-and-gerrard-interest/blt0cd5f076ec45b9a7" target="_blank">Nigeria international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali </a>is reportedly a transfer target of Chiefs but the Soweto giants face competition for his signature from overseas clubs.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Soweto giants are left with seven Premier Soccer League games before the season ends.It is to be seen if Khune will manage to muscle his way back to become the number-one goalkeeper ahead of Bvuma and Petersen.
