Mayo was not part of Broos' preliminary squad but <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/ngezana-mayo-kaizer-chiefs-bvuma-make-bafana-bafana-final-squad-for-international-friendlies/bltb30452880141e6d7" target="_blank">he managed to sneak into the final 23-man team</a> that will face Andorra and Algeria in the Fifa series international friendlies.<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/premier-soccer-league-top-scorers-2023-24-peter-shalulile-zakhele-lepasa-chibuike-ohizu-and-the-race-for-golden-boot/blt11d9afef3d5ec5d9" target="_blank">Mayo is the highest-scoring South African in the PSL with nine strikes </a>to his name as he tails Mamelodi Sundowns' rampant Lucas Ribeiro.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Cape Town City man was left out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations squad that finished third in Ivory Coast, and Broos has explained why Mayo has drifted in and out of the national set up.Broos suggests that Mayo tends to disappear in a game, much like Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who is the only exception for Broos.

"Mayo was not in the Afcon because he was good months ago but he did not progress. He needed to go one more step to be a real Bafana Bafana player but he did not," Broos told members of the media when naming his 23-man team."Now with all the injuries we have, I'm giving him another chance and it is up to him to show that he can reach the level of Bafana. If he can then okay, we have gained a young good striker and that means we have fewer problems in the future. "I find that Mayo sometimes is out of the game. You are looking for him but you don't see him but he is there with no action. You cannot be like that as a striker, certainly at the level that we play."Maybe it is a mental problem for him to want to have that mentality that says 'I want to show [that I can deliver]'," Broos explained.

WHAT WAS SAID

"He is a nice guy and I like him and he was with us before because there is potential but he needs to take another step and he doesn't, he will always be someone who scores goals and will never reach an international level that he wants," said the Bafana mentor."[What he does] is not enough. You can wait for the ball until you score but that is not what we want. You can do that with Messi, but not with Mayo, I am very sorry."He has to prove himself and be in the game. If you don't touch the ball at international level, it means we play with 10-man," he concluded.

AND WHAT ELSE

This will be the first time that the national team assembles after the Afcon and Broos will have a chance to sharpen the saw in these two friendly games ahead of the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers. Bafana will revive their rivalry with Nigeria in June.
