  • WHAT HAPPENED?

England boss Gareth Southgate revealed earlier this year that Arsenal sporting director Edu had informed him that White had requested to be left out of the national team set-up, stemming from an incident at the 2022 World Cup where he left the camp. But in light of the 26-year-old's sparkling form for Arsenal, former Gunners forward Smith has lamented the fact the defender won't be available at this summer's European Championship.

    WHAT ALAN SMITH SAID

He told Crypto Casino: "It's a great shame that Ben White doesn’t want to be selected for England. Gareth Southgate is not willing to tell people because it’s probably a personal matter, but he’s in brilliant form and would be an asset to any side. He was fantastic against Wolves at the weekend and again against Chelsea on Tuesday to get those goals, but if he doesn’t want to play for England then he doesn’t want to play! It’s quite an unusual situation, but he’s certainly doing the business for Arsenal and they’re probably happy that he can solely focus on his club career from now on."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

It appears White will not play for England while Southgate is in charge. The former Brighton star has excelled at right-back under Mikel Arteta, although he can also play as a defensive midfielder or in the centre of defence. Moreover, as he is so versatile and is playing so well, White is, arguably, a loss for England as they try to win the Euros.

    WHAT NEXT?

White's Arsenal, who sit top of the table ahead of second-placed Manchester City, are away to north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday afternoon. Realistically, they need to win as City have a game in hand on the Gunners.
