SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt sat with Thisisfootball Africa in a candid interview where he spoke about his time at Kaizer Chiefs, among other issues. Hunt is credited for giving Phakamani Mahlambi his big break in the Premier Soccer League as the former Bidvest Wits star went to play for Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns before things went south for him.Hunt highlights how he converted him from a winger to a more advanced role and attempts to revive his career at Chippa United and SuperSport.

WHAT HAPPENED

Mahlambi was tipped to be one of the future Bafana Bafana stars given his talent, but his career hit a snag when he left Sundowns as coaches like Pitso Mosimane, Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena have all failed to help him unlock his full potential. Mahlambi has been without a team for some time and given Hunt's comments, the speedy player may have lost the appetite for professional football.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

"He is the biggest waste of talent and the biggest disgrace. We had him in our youth team (at Wits) and he played wide for coach Glen Salmon but I always thought he was a No.9 because he was so quick. I took him into the first team and I played him in the first game against Platinum Stars and he scored a hat-trick," Hunt told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-UaJ9AfO1o&amp;t=1330" target="_blank">Thisisfootball Africa</a>. "Then we went to play Al Ahly in the Caf Champions League, 70 000 people (in the stadium) and they ended up signing him. He had a great move and his salary moved from R20 000 [I don't know] a month to R500 000."Then he came back to Sundowns and he obviously falls out there and then I go to Chippa United, I take him with him to have some fun in the sun, I bring him down there, he plays his first game against Orlando Pirates and he scores a goal."

WHAT WAS SAID 

"He was 10 kg overweight and in the second game he played against Stellenbosch and he snapped his Achilles tendon and was out for the season. Then I went to SuperSport, he called me and asked if he could come and train. I tell him 'Phakamani, you don't need six weeks, you need six months, but we can get you right in eight weeks'," said Hunt. "I got him no football, I had him pulling tyres and he shed a lot of weight, then he just stopped and said he can't do it anymore. He fell out of love with the game, he is 26 years old, a disgrace. If you have pace in football, you don't have to be a good footballer, you can get away with it because people are scared of pace."

AND WHAT MORE: 

"I was at a restaurant a couple of years ago when he just left us for Al Ahly. He had about six mates and they were having a good time, I called the waiter over and I asked what's the bill there so far. He said the bill was R45 000," Hunt explained. "They were drinking Hennessy and he was 21 years old at that time. I told the waiter to not serve any more drinks there. Where's the mentality? I've tried to speak to the boy but it never worked."

In his attempt to revive his career, Mahlambi's off-the-field antics irked Benni McCarthy at AmaZulu and froze him out of the team before he went to the Chilli Boys.The Johannesburg-born player last played in 2021 and it remains to be seen whether he will return to the green grass any time soon.
