Transfer window players to watch GFXGOAL

Kylian Mbappe, Joao Cancelo, Christian Pulisic and the 50 players to watch as the 2023 summer transfer window opens

The last two summer transfer windows have been full of twists and turns - and 2023 is set to be just as dramatic. A host of top clubs are on the lookout for a new centre-forward, which could create a ripple effect across Europe, while left-back is also a position of interest for several high-profile clubs.

The free agency market is looking bloated with well-known stars, but that's not to say that some hefty transfer fees won't be chucked around - particularly if the likes of Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen and Jude Bellingham are to leave their current employers.

There will also be plenty of bargains to be had if clubs can time their business right. Contracts are running down across the leagues, continuing the trend of increasing player power we have witnessed over the past few years.

With the transfer window officially opening for Premier League clubs on Wednesday, we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at which players are worth keeping a close eye on this summer. Below, GOAL details 50 such stars who fit this description perfectly...

  • Andre Onana Inter 2022-23Getty

    Andre Onana (Inter)

Onana has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world at Inter this season. An excellent shot-stopper, the Cameroon international also excels at stepping into the backline to help with build-up play. Several big clubs are looking for a new number-one and he could provide the perfect solution.

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Chelsea Arsenal 2022-23Getty Images

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Chelsea)

Aubameyang's Chelsea move has been pretty pointless. He was never overly keen to depart Barcelona in the first place and he's had zero impact at Stamford Bridge. He is a big earner and the Blues will be desperately trying to shove him out the exit door. Interest could be thin, though.

  • FolarinーBalogun(C)Getty Images

    Folarin Balogun (Arsenal)

Balogun ended the debate surrounding his international allegiances recently by committing to the United States over England and Nigeria, but his club future remains uncertain. He must surely depart Arsenal to continue his rapid development and faces a huge decision on where to head next.

  • Jude Bellingham Borussia Dortmund 2023Getty Images

    Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund)

Bellingham's name has dominated the past three transfer windows and he was all set to be the star attraction of the gossip columns this summer too. That was until Real Madrid blew everyone else out the water by agreeing a deal all the way back in May. He's poised to be unveiled as a Madrid player soon, which will kick off another set of debates regarding where he fits into the team.

  • Moises Caicedo Brighton 2022-23Getty

    Moises Caicedo (Brighton)

Another player whose reputation skyrocketed during the 2022-23 season, Caicedo pushed for a move to Arsenal in January before committing his future to Brighton by signing a new four-year contract just four weeks later. That new deal hasn't ended the transfer rumours, though. Players of Caicedo's profile are hard to come by and the Seagulls can expect plenty more offers for one of their prized assets.

  • Joao-Cancelo(C)Getty Images

    Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

Cancelo had a tumultuous 2022-23 season, being bombed out by Pep Guardiola and Man City before enduring an equally tricky relationship with Thomas Tuchel during his loan spell with Bayern Munich. Neither club want him back in the fold for next season, meaning someone might be able to swoop in and get themselves a bargain this summer.

  • Dani Ceballos Real MadridGetty Images

    Dani Ceballos (Real Madrid)

Yes, Ceballos is still a Real Madrid player - for now anyway. The Spaniard was keen to prove his worth and earn a new contract this season, but he hasn't quite managed to do so. A free agent, Ceballos may want to stay in Spain or test himself in the Premier League once again, following a topsy-turvy loan spell with Arsenal between 2019 and 2021.

  • Alphonso Davies FC Bayern 2023Getty Images

    Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich)

Has Davies had enough of life in Bavaria? Recent reports suggest so, with Man City and Real Madrid readying themselves for a transfer tug-of-war. Both teams need a left-back, so the rumours make sense.

  • Roberto-Firmino(C)Getty Images

    Roberto Firmino (Liverpool)

It's already been confirmed that Firmino will be leaving Anfield this summer. He departs as a Liverpool legend and it's tough to say where he might land next. Barcelona are very interested, but the Brazilian may fancy a more relaxing challenge in MLS.

  • Raphael Guerreiro Borussia Dortmund 2023Getty Images

    Raphael Guerreiro (Borussia Dortmund)

Guerreiro has been one of the most productive left-backs on the planet for some time and there is a growing feeling that he has run out of road at Borussia Dortmund as his contract runs into its final weeks. Man City might fancy giving him a call as they have been without a natural left-back for pretty much the entire season.

  • 20230514 Ilkay Gundogan(C)Getty Images

    Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City)

Gundogan's stunning end-of-season form played a huge role in clinching the Premier League title for Manchester City. Now, with another glut of trophies secured, the German looks poised to move on. Barcelona are long-term admirers, but if they can't find the cash to pay the free agent's salary, he will have his pick of clubs this summer.

  • Eden Hazard Real MadridGetty Images

    Eden Hazard (Real Madrid)

Hazard's big-money move to the Bernabeu has to go down as one of the worst transfers of all time. The Belgian has contributed hardly anything to Madrid since joining, and Los Blancos will be desperate to get him off the wage bill this summer. That's easier said than done of course, and a lot will depend on whether Hazard has grown tired of sitting on the bench collecting his obscene wages.

  • Daichi Kamada Frankfurt 2022(C)Getty Images

    Daichi Kamada (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Industrious, creative and clinical, Kamada could represent one of the best-value free transfers this summer. The Eintracht Frankfurt star is being courted by a host of clubs, with AC Milan, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund all interested.

  • Harry Kane Tottenham Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Another summer, another spate of reports linking Kane with a move away from Tottenham. It might finally happen this time around, though, with Spurs at the lowest ebb of their modern history following a scarring season.

  • Joao Felix Chelsea 2022-23Getty Images

    Joao Felix (Atletico Madrid)

Joao Felix ending up costing Chelsea £4 million ($5m) per appearance during his ill-fated loan spell. He showed flashes of quality but the Blues are unlikely to break the bank to sign him permanently. This has opened the door for other clubs to snap him up, with Wolves and Aston Villa the latest sides linked.

  • Min-jae Kim Napoli 2023Getty

    Kim Min-jae (Napoli)

Victor Osimhen and Khivicha Kvaratskhelia have stolen the majority of the headlines this season, but Kim has been just as important to Napoli's unexpected title charge. An archetypal modern centre-back, the South Korea international would walk into any team in Europe on current form and he'll be valued very highly by the Serie A champions.

  • Kovacic Chelsea 2022-23Getty

    Mateo Kovacic (Chelsea)

With his contract due to expire at the end of the 2023-24 season and an extension looking unlikely, Chelsea are set to cash in on Kovacic while they still can. A classy operator, the Blues may regret letting him go, especially with Premier League rivals Manchester United among those circling.

  • Khvicha Kvaratskhelia Udinese Napoli Serie AGetty

    Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Napoli)

It's hard to think of a player who's come out of nowhere as dramatically as 'Kvaradona' for Napoli this season. Plucked from Georgian side Dinamo Batumi in the summer, his mesmeric dribbling, goals and assists have propelled Luciano Spalletti's side to domestic dominance this campaign. A unique talent, plenty of clubs will be testing the Partenopei's resolve this transfer window.

  • Romeo Lavia Southampton 2022-23Getty Images

    Romeo Lavia (Southampton)

Lavia might be an even better pick-up than Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse. The 2023 NXGN Nine inductee is going right to the top, but his journey to the summit of European football likely cannot afford a pit stop in the Championship with the Saints. He won't come cheap, however.

  • Romelu Lukaku InterGetty

    Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea)

Lukaku might be starting in a Champions League final soon, but his long-term club future is far from certain. Before his recent resurgence, Inter did not seem to have much interest in making his loan switch permanent and the Belgian needs to meet with new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino to determine if he has a future at Stamford Bridge. There could even be a third club out there looking to capitalise on this uncertainty by swooping for Lukaku this summer.

  • Tyler Adams Leeds 2022-23Getty

    Tyler Adams (Leeds)

Adams absence towards the end of the Premier League season did little to aid Leeds' survival bid. In the end, the Whites did end up going down and the USMNT captain seems unlikely to settle for second-tier football. Liverpool are long-term admirers, but they will be interest from right across Europe this summer.

  • James Maddison Leicester City 2022-23 on floorGetty Images

    James Maddison (Leicester City)

Even without a relegation thrown into the mix it was always pretty likely that Maddison would depart the King Power Stadium this summer. Newcastle, Tottenham and Arsenal are all interested and more clubs could enter the fray as the window progresses.

  • Harry Maguire 2022-23Getty

    Harry Maguire (Manchester United)

It's hard not to feel some sympathy for Maguire's situation. From the most expensive defender in the world to an afterthought in the team you supposedly captain. The atmosphere at Old Trafford has soured beyond repair and he needs to leave to rediscover his spark.

  • Sadio Mane FC Bayern 2023Getty Images

    Sadio Mane (Bayern Munich)

Mane's move from Liverpool to Bayern has not worked out for any of the parties involved. The Reds seriously missed his goals, while the forward himself has never properly got going in Bavaria. He could be considering calling time on his Bundesliga career early to find a club where he clicks with his team-mates.

  • Mbappe PSG 2022-23Getty

    Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain)

The saga was supposed to be over last May when Mbappe signed that new contract at PSG. However, the forward has now informed his employers that he has no intention of activating the clause in his contract that would see him remain in France until 2025. As a result, Mbappe will be available on a free next summer and PSG are considering selling him in the next few months.

  • Ferland Mendy Real MadridGetty Images

    Ferland Mendy (Real Madrid)

Mendy has shown flashes of real quality during his time at Real Madrid, but his inability to remain fit seems to have led to Los Blancos finally running out of patience. The Frenchman has reportedly been offered to Arsenal, and with so many teams looking for a left-back this summer, he is sure to find a spot to land eventually should Madrid really push for him to leave.

  • Lionel-Messi(C)GettyImages

    Lionel Messi (Inter Miami)

Messi's time at PSG came to a pretty bitter end, with supporters reacting angrily to the legendary forward jetting off on an unscheduled trip to Saudi Arabia. He was heavily linked with a move to the Gulf state soon after, before eventually settling on Inter Miami.

  • James Milner Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    James Milner (Liverpool)

Thirty-seven years old and still going strong, Milner is showing no desire to hang up his boots when he leaves Anfield this summer. He seems like the perfect personality to thrive as a modern manager and may want to pick a club where he can learn from an exciting coach. Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton seems like a perfect move.

  • Mason Mount 2022-23 GFXGetty/ GOAL

    Mason Mount (Chelsea)

The jewel in the crown of Chelsea's youth academy could be moving on this summer. Mount hasn't done much wrong, but a combination of competition for places and financial pressure could spell the end of his Blues career. A coach's dream, Jurgen Klopp is one of his many admirers.

  • Tomas-Muller(C)Getty Images

    Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

It's difficult to imagine a world where Muller isn't scoring and assisting for Bayern Munich, but his historic stint in Bavaria could be coming to an end soon. Sacked CEO Oliver Kahn was desperate for him to stay, but with Thomas Tuchel set to remain in the dugout, the legendary forward may hot tail it away from the Allianz Arena.

  • Evan Ndicka Eintracht Frankfurt 2022-23Getty Images

    Evan Ndicka (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Left-footed centre-backs are like gold dust in the current market, meaning Ndicka would have fetched Eintracht a pretty penny this summer - if he wasn't out of contract of course. He's only 23 too, meaning he's got plenty of time to get so much better.

  • Neymar(C)Getty Images

    Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain)

The ballad of Neymar in Paris might be reaching its crescendo. A section of PSG fans are trying to force him out and the Brazilian might humour their requests. He hasn't hit the levels he's capable of for some time and may be due a fresh challenge. The real issue will be finding somewhere to match his salary demands.

  • Victor-Osimhen(C)GettyImages

    Victor Osimhen (Napoli)

Pretty much every top club in Europe is after a No.9 this summer and strikers don't come much better than Osimhen. Napoli will be doing everything in their power to keep him as they look to defend the Scudetto, but the on-field and financial incentives on offer elsewhere may prove too enticing to turn down.

  • Oxlade-Chamberlain(C)Getty Images

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool)

Injuries have curtailed Oxlade-Chamberlain's contributions to Liverpool more recently, but when he first joined he put in a string of top performances for the Reds. Premier League clubs are considering a move for the soon-to-be free agent, but he might fancy a stint abroad to resurrect his stuttering career.

  • Patino Arsenal 2022-23Getty

    Charlie Patino (Arsenal)

Patino, how has it come to this? Once tipped as the future of the Gunners' midfield, the hot prospect will leave the Emirates Stadium this summer. He should be ready to test himself in the Premier League after excelling on loan at Blackpool, but his silky midfield style may suit him better to a move on the continent.

  • Pickford Everton 2022-23Getty

    Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Pickford has served his time scrapping at the bottom of the table - it's time for him to depart Goodison Park. This might be a win for both parties. Everton need to raise funds for a rebuild and Pickford needs to play at the highest level to keep his spot as England's No.1.

  • Christian Pulisic bench Chelsea 2022-23Getty Images

    Christian Pulisic (Chelsea)

The 2022-23 campaign was a season of stagnation for Pulisic. Injuries and poor form have restricted his involvement at Chelsea and he needs to move on for the good of his career. The world is the United States star's oyster, with interest being attracted from clubs in England, Italy and Spain.

  • Rabiot JuventusGetty

    Adrien Rabiot (Juventus)

Many Manchester United fans were unhappy when the club were linked with a move for Rabiot last summer. Well, they could get the chance to be disappointed all over again! The Juventus midfielder is out of contract and ready to plug a gap in midfield for someone.

  • David Raya Brentford 2022-23Getty

    David Raya (Brentford)

Several Premier League sides are eyeing up a goalkeeper this summer and they could go shopping for their new No.1 in west London. Brentford star Raya has been pretty open about wanting to leave, with Manchester United and Chelsea set to battle it out for his signature this summer.

  • Declan Rice West Ham 2022-23Getty

    Declan Rice (West Ham)

Rice's £120 million ($149.6m) price tag has attracted a lot of ridicule, but it's a pretty fair reflection of how important he is to West Ham. If Manchester United, Man City, Arsenal or whoever wants an English midfielder for the next decade, that's just how much it costs in the current market.

  • Bernardo Silva Man CityGetty

    Bernardo Silva (Manchester City)

Bernardo came close to departing Man City after they lost in the 2021 Champions League final. He stayed in the end, remaining a reliable performer for Pep Guardiola's trophy-winning juggernaut. Speculation has started up again this summer, with Paris Saint-Germain potentially viewing him as Messi's successor. No pressure, Bernardo!

  • Caglar Soyuncu Leicester 2022-23Getty Images

    Caglar Soyuncu (Leicester City)

It's easy to forget, but Soyuncu was once one of the best defenders in the Premier League, getting voted into the 2019-20 PFA Team of the Year. It's been a steady decline since, with the Turkey international spending the majority of Leicester's doomed season on the sidelines after falling out with Brendan Rodgers. He's finally left on a free transfer, with Atletico Madrid currently leading the race to sign him on a free.

  • Marcus Thuram of Borussia MoenchengladbachGetty Images

    Marcus Thuram (Borussia Monchengladbach)

A long-time resident of the transfer rumour mill, this should finally be the summer where Thuram gets that big move he's always dreamt of. He's not super-prolific but would be a snug fit for any high-energy pressing coach out there, especially on a free transfer.

  • Brenden Aaronson 2022-23Getty

    Brenden Aaronson (Leeds)

Aaronson endured a tough season at Leeds, attracting criticism for his lack of physicality. That issue is unlikely to subside in the Championship but his technical ability could suit him for a move to the continent instead.

  • Kieran Tierney Arsenal 2022-23Getty

    Kieran Tierney (Arsenal)

Tierney is getting a little bit tired of playing second fiddle to Oleksandr Zinchenko at Arsenal and may push for a move away. They'd be plenty of Premier League sides willing to give the Scotland international the playing time he craves, too.

  • Donny van de Beek Manchester United 2022-23Getty

Donny van de Beek (Manchester United)

Van de Beek has had no luck since joining United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer never trusted the Dutchman, and just when he was seeing some minutes under Erik ten Hag, a serious knee injury ruled him out for the season. United are believed to want to revamp their midfield in the summer and there may not be room for Van de Beek.

  • James Ward-Prowse celebrate Southampton 2022-23Getty Images

    James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Ward-Prowse has been let down by poor off-field planning at Southampton. The midfielder has performed admirably during his time at St Mary's, but a complete failure to recruit any Premier League experience in the summer meant relegation was always likely. Ward-Prowse should land on his feet without too many problems at least, with Tottenham one of his options this summer.

  • Weghorst(C)Getty Images

    Wout Weghorst (Burnley)

Weghorst simply did not score enough goals to earn himself a permanent switch to Manchester United and it's far from certain that Vincent Kompany will want him back at Burnley for the Clarets' Premier League return. Perhaps a return to Turkey could be on the cards.

  • Granit Xhaka Arsenal 2022-23Getty Images

    Granit Xhaka (Arsenal)

After completing a remarkable return from the cold at the Emirates Stadium, Xhaka will be leaving on a high in the transfer window. He has been a vital cog in the Gunners' title-challenging midfield and will offer a lot to his new club - which looks set to be Bayer Leverkusen.

  • Wilfried Zaha 16:9Getty

    Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace)

Zaha is Mr Crystal Palace and his loyalty to the Eagles means he might have left it too late to get his much-desired move to a Champions League club this summer. There was interest in his services from Saudi Arabia earlier this year, though, and he could still sneak into Europe's premier club competition by spreading his net wider than the Premier League. Dortmund were suitors at one time, for example.
