Man Utd player ratings vs Man City: Marcus Rashford goes from derby hero to zero as Andre Onana heroics go unrewarded to leave top-four hopes in tatters

Marcus Rashford answered his critics with one swing of his right boot and then justified them for the rest of the derby as Manchester City overhauled his early strike to earn a crushing 3-1 win in Sunday's derby.

Rashford scored a shock opener with a scorching strike which silenced the Etihad Stadium, as well as his many doubters, who he turned on last week in an article in the Player's Tribune. But United failed to build on the momentum and so did Rashford, who bungled two great chances to double their advantage.

United's ultra-defensive tactics got them through to half-time, but there was a huge sense of inevitability about City's victory once Phil Foden equalised. And that goal owed a lot to Rashford, who clumsily tried to win a foul against Kyle Walker but was instead dispossessed, and Foden showed no remorse.

City continued to dominate the game, but this time they had belief and United's early determination faded, with Foden scoring again before Erling Haaland made sure of the points. In truth, United never expected to win this game, but as the old adage goes, it's the hope that kills you, and there will be a big sense of frustration that they could not take advantage of their strong start.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Andre Onana (8/10):

Set up Rashford's goal with a laser punt forward and was excellent at shot-stopping, thwarting Rodri, Foden and Doku. Nothing he could do about Foden's first goal, but he could have got a stronger hand on his second strike.

    Diogo Dalot (5/10):

Stuck mostly to defending due to United's tactics. Did a decent enough job, but had some sloppy passes too. Switched to left-back for final 20 minutes.

    Jonny Evans (4/10):

Got a few good blocks in but when City kicked in to their usual gears he couldn't keep up. The first to be taken off.

    Raphael Varane (6/10):

Stood tall and got himself in the way of plenty of shots and passes. Took a booking for fouling Haaland after he had escaped from Evans.

    Victor Lindelof (5/10):

Struggled to cope with Foden and was pushed inside for the final 20 minutes.

    Midfield

    Kobbie Mainoo (6/10):

Did a good job of closing City's passing channels and recycling the ball to stave off the pressure.

    Casemiro (5/10):

Helped contain City and crucially contained himself, avoiding a booking.

    Scott McTominay (5/10):

Pulled out of a tackle in the first half which led to a clear City chance. Doesn't have the quality to make the difference in a game of this magnitude.

  • Alejandro Garnacho Manchester United 2023-24Getty Images

    Attack

    Alejandro Garnacho (5/10):

A big disappointment. Couldn't create any real danger.

    Marcus Rashford (5/10):

Scored a rocket but then returned to his recent, disappointing version of himself. Bungled two good chances to score and crucially lost the ball before City equalised.

    Bruno Fernandes (6/10):

Did well in the false nine role and his excellent hold-up play teed up Rashford. Worked hard and defended valiantly.

  • Erik ten Hag Manchester United 2023-24Getty Images

    Subs & Manager

    Willy Kambwala (5/10):

Had a tough task of dealing with De Bruyne in the unfamiliar position of right-back. All things considered, he did OK.

    Antony (4/10):

Pretty useless. Widely mocked by the City fans.

    Sofyan Amrabat (N/A):

Brought on in the 82nd minute and lost the ball in the build-up to Haaland's goal.

    Omari Forson (N/A):

Thrown on in the 82nd minute.

    Erik ten Hag (5/10):

His gameplan relied on City being imprecise and not taking their chances. Once they found a way through, he had no answer.
