Sam Kerr wins NWSL golden boot despite huge disadvantage

Australian superstar Sam Kerr has clinched the National Women's Soccer League golden boot despite playing less matches than her competitors.

The 24-year-old scored 16 goals in 19 games for Chicago Red Stars to win the award for the second consecutive time from Lynn Williams (14 goals, North Carolina Courage) and Lindsey Horan (12, Portland Thorns).

What made the achievement even more impressive is the fact Kerr is the only player in the top five to have played less than 20 league games.

Kerr's Chicago team finished the regular season in fourth position - the last place which is given a playoff spot.

They will face NWSL premiers North Carolina Courage, with the winner qualifying for the competition championship decider.
