Manu Garba needs support for Gombe United stay, says Chigozie

Gombe United’s Morris Chigozie says coach Manu Garba needs more support to help the team escape the drop from the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Having lost 2-1 against Sunshine Stars in Ijebu Ode, the forward admitted his side were not convincing to deserve a draw after squandering their scoring chances.

He further appealed to the fans to rally behind the team in their bid to stay put in the Nigerian topflight ahead of Abia Warriors' visit on Wednesday.

"We went to Ijebu Ode with hope of getting something but we couldn't make it happen," Chigozie told Goal.

"We had our chances but didn't take them during the match. And when Sunshine had their own and took them. When we were leading us by 2-0, we get a goal but we could push hard enough to get a draw.

"We are still hoping to get out of our current position. We are not happy as a team about our current situation. But sadly, our supporters seem to be backing off right now.

They are not helping or encouraging us at all. Instead showing their great support at this point, they are abusing us [players and the coaches].

"The coach [Garba] is doing is best but he needs more support and some technical advice to help the team stay up. I believe he has the quality but things look to be getting out of hand now.

"He has no problem with us because he is a nice coach and we want to play for him. He is an open, accessible coach and free minded man. But I know we have to push more.

"We need the supporters to show us more support now when things are not going well. It is not our happiness that things are like this for us. They can't afford to abandon us because when we need them the most to help us recover from the current situation.

"As players, we are not losing hope yet but very determined and hopeful to stay in the [topflight] league. We will bounce back against Abia Warriors. It will not be easy but we will make it happen."

Gombe United are 19th on the log with 27 points from 21 games, while Abia Warriors are 11th with 35 points from same matches.
