Guinean club Wakriya deny signing former Liverpool and France star Djibril Cisse

Guinean top-flight league side Wakriya has denied reports that they were close to signing former Liverpool and France striker Djibril Cisse.

It was reported that the 37-year-old Cisse had signed a one-year contract and agreed to play for free for the club which would be taking part in the Caf Confederation Cup next season.

But the Guinean club’s president Mikailou Sampou has moved in to dismiss the rumours.

“I have never discussed (this) with Djibril Cissé,” Sampou told Wakriya’s official website.

“I was informed of this strange news by a friend… but I was not aware of it. We do not have the means to bring a player of Cisse’s calibre.

“However, if a player of his size expresses the will to play for Wakriya without asking anything in return as the rumour speculates, the door is not closed.

“But let it be clear, I have never had contact with Djibril, I have never discussed (this) with him. This is news that surprises me like any other person."

A Uefa Champions League winner with Liverpool in 2005, Cisse’s last well known stint in football was with Swiss third tier side Yverdon Sport, after having also played in Reunion.

The former Marselle striker made 41 appearances for France, scoring nine goals and featured at the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
