It was the 38th career Premier League goal for Chicharito, who scored his previous 37 during his time with Manchester United.
Hernandez wouldn't have to wait long for goal 39, as he volleyed home another rebound in the 74th minute to make it 2-2. Southampton would go on to defeat the 10-man visitors 3-2 after a late penalty from Charlie Austin.
The Mexico international joined West Ham from Bayer Leverkusen in the offseason, with the Hammers paying £16 million for the 29-year-old.
