Former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has been busy following Wellington Phoenix on social media sparking suggestions he is set to join the club.

The Phoenix are yet to sign a player this off-season and are expected to announce their first deal on Tuesday with Taylor a top suspect.

While still contracted to League One side Peterborough United, the 32-year-old has been made available for transfer by the club and has been spotted liking Wellington posts on Instagram.

Read into that what you will, but what is clear is that the club need a centre back after Marco Rossi's departure and Andrew Durante could certainly benefit from Taylor's presence.

Taylor played 51 games for Peterborough across league and cup fixtures last season scoring four goals in the process.

Sydney FC leading the race for Fernando Torres

After The Covert Agent revealed Fernando Torres has lowered his wage demands, Sydney FC are now seemingly in pole position to land the Spanish star.

Securing recent transfer fees for Bobo and Adrian Mierzejewski, the Sky Blues have the money to bring the former Atletico man Down Under and have a history of signing marquees in the past.

They must however fight off interest from fellow A-League side Melbourne Victory, the MLS and China.

Japanese club Sagan Tosu were originally leading the race to sign Torres a few weeks ago but hit a bump with the two failing to agree on personal terms.

Leroy George now a free agent but Melbourne Victory not giving up

Melbourne Victory's star performer last season is now a free agent with Leroy George's contract with the club officially expiring at the end of June.

A report by The Australian in May suggested a move to Japan looked likely, but Victory aren't giving up hope of retaining the Dutch winger and are seemingly in talks to re-sign him.

Victory have lost a number of players this off-season with Besart Berisha the latest to depart and Rhys Williams close to joining him.

If Victory can't convince George to stay, Sydney FC have been linked to a swoop but will be hamstrung should they decide to pursue Torres.

Socceroos defender has been officially unveiled as an Al-Ittihad player after swapping South Korea for Saudi Arabia.

The 28-year-old was contracted to Suwon Bluewings but attracted a rumoured $500,000 transfer fee to move to the Middle East.

Jurman was in the Socceroos World Cup squad but didn't make an appearance with his focus now on performing for his new club and securing a start at the 2019 Asian Cup.
