    'Kane's done it before'

Joe Strange: It’s got to be Harry Kane, hasn’t it? This season’s European Golden Shoe winner, 44 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich and he’s England’s all-time record scorer. Yes, he wasn’t at his best during the 2022 World Cup, but he’s done it before at major tournaments - he scored four at the last Euros and won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup - and he returns to Germany off the back of his best ever domestic season in front of goal. Plus, he’s got Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Co providing the ammunition.

'Hojlund could do some real damage'

James Westwood: Denmark reached the semi-finals of the last Euros, and could repeat the trick with Manchester United's £75-million man, Rasmus Hojlund, leading the line. Hojlund was hampered by injury in his first year at Old Trafford, but still hit 16 goals, including five in United's dismal Champions League group-stage campaign as he showed off his tournament chops. The 21-year-old also found the net seven times in eight games as Denmark finished top of their qualifying group, and could do some real damage in Germany after returning to full fitness.

  • Niclas Fullkrug Germany 2024Getty Images

    'Fullkrug's massive German forehead'

Matt O'Connor-Simpson: Picture the scene. It’s the opening game and Germany simply cannot break down Scotland’s stubborn, haggis-fuelled back five. With 15 minutes left, Julian Nagelsmann drags off the ineffectual Kai Havertz in favour of Niclas Fullkrug. Within moments, he’s there at the back post, rising high to nod home a Toni Kroos free-kick, cementing his starting position for the rest of the tournament in the process. He goes on to finish Euro 2024 with six goals, each scored with his massive German forehead. Either that, or Harry Kane.

  • Harry Kane England 2024Getty Images

'Kane will be licking his lips'

Stephen Darwin: England have, on paper, a straightforward group, and Harry Kane will be licking his lips at the prospect of building a healthy goal tally in the early stages of Euro 2024. The Three Lions are expected to go deep in the competition, and with Kane on penalties, and not ignoring the fact he'll be playing at stadiums he'll be familiar with following his hugely impressive first season at Bayern Munich, he has every chance of being crowned the Golden Boot winner.

  • Kylian Mbappe France 2024Getty Images

'Mbappe can focus on filling his boots'

Richard Martin: It might be the obvious answer, but Kylian Mbappe is the best player in the world and always steps up to the big stage. Just take his record at his three previous major tournaments - 16 goals in 16 starts. The France team has been constructed to get the best out of him, and he is fortunate to play alongside his club-mates of last season, Ousmane Dembele and Randal Kolo Muani, in the front three, meaning he has as good an understanding as possible with his fellow attackers. Mbappe heads to the tournament with his future finally resolved and knowing he will be a Real Madrid player next season, so he will not be distracted and can fully focus on filling his boots. Don't be surprised if he equals Thierry Henry as France's second all-time scorer on his way to collecting a Euros Golden Boot to sit next to the one he earned at the World Cup.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal 2024Getty Images

'Ronaldo will do serious damage to sub-standard opposition'

Mark Doyle: This is likely to become a straight shootout between Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo, given both superstar forwards will be surrounded by a vast array of creative attacking talents in title-contending teams placed in desperately weak groups. It's also worth noting that neither England nor Portugal are scheduled to meet a group winner until the semi-finals. So, expect Kane and Ronaldo to do some serious damage to sub-standard opposition before the business end of the tournament. The international game’s all-time leading goal-scorer is probably the best bet, as Portugal’s first-round fixtures are even softer than England’s.

  • Harry Kane England 2024Getty Images

    'Kane to continue unbelievable season'

Amee Ruszkai: Harry Kanecomes into the Euros off the back of an unbelievable season in front of goal and I fully expect him to continue that form in this tournament. England's group-stage draw feels quite kind and I certainly wouldn't say any of Denmark, Serbia or Slovenia have particularly air-tight defences. With Kane unlikely to be rotated out of Gareth Southgate's XI, he can make a strong start in the race for the Golden Boot and help fire the Three Lions towards the latter stages, too.

  • Aleksandar Mitrovic Serbia 2023Getty Images

    'Don't sleep on red-hot Mitrovic'

Krishan Davis: There is only one forward who can hold a candle to Kane, Ronaldo and Mbappe after the domestic campaign, and that man is Aleksandar Mitrovic. Granted, his 40 goals this season might have come in Saudi Arabia, but the lumbering striker has shown in the past that he can mix it with the best, and he was Serbia's main man at the 2022 World Cup with two goals in three games. Mitrovic is the hipster's choice, but if the 29-year-old can fire the perennial dark horses out of a fairly even group behind England - although he'll fancy his chances against the Three Lions' shaky defence, too - he will back himself and his country to spring a surprise. Don't sleep on the red-hot Al-Hilal hitman.

  • Niclas Fullkrug Germany 2024Getty Images

'Fullkrug can write himself into German folklore'

Tom Maston: While Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe feel like the most sensible Golden Boot picks, I've got a funny feeling about Germany this summer. Kai Havertz is likely to start up front for the hosts, but if the Arsenal frontman fails to fire in the opening couple of games, Niclas Fullkrug could well force his way into the line up and write himself into German football folklore. He showed in the Champions League for Borussia Dortmund that he can perform on the biggest stage, and he could easily score five or six goals at this tournament, too.
