Wayne Rooney aims brutal dig at Gary Neville and reveals how he convinced wife Coleen to move to Plymouth

Rooney, known for his sharp wit and candid remarks, was in high spirits following his return from Euro 2024 punditry duties for the BBC in Germany during his first press conference as Plymouth boss. He targeted his long-time friend and colleague, Neville, on his brief and tumultuous managerial career at Valencia where he could win only three of 16 La Liga matches before being dismissed in March 2016.

In contrast to Neville's brief managerial career, Rooney has accumulated significant experience over the past four years. He started his managerial journey with a commendable tenure at Derby County, followed by a 15-month period with MLS side DC United. His latest position before joining Plymouth was a challenging three-month spell at Birmingham City.

Reflecting on his decision to return to management, Rooney quipped, "Because I don't want to be the next Gary Neville!"

Neville has been open about his struggles in management. Recently, on the Stick to Football podcast, Neville recounted how Ernesto Valverde, the Athletic Bilbao manager, had made him feel "massively inferior" with his tactical acumen.

Rooney also shared a light-hearted story about convincing his wife, Coleen, to relocate to Devon from their Cheshire mansion for his new role at Plymouth. Known for his quick wit, Rooney humorously described how he sold the idea to Coleen by telling her Devon was the "Monaco of England."

Despite the jest, Rooney expressed genuine appreciation for the warm welcome he received in Devon and Cornwall. He praised the beauty of the countryside and coastal areas, noting how every person he encountered had been friendly and welcoming. He added: "Every person I've met has been really welcoming. I've had a chat with quite a few people. This is my home now, this is where I'm working and living."

As Rooney settles into his new role, he faces the task of leading Plymouth Argyle to success in the Championship. They will start their pre-season friendlies in a week with a clash against Orlando Pirates on July 12 followed by four more matches against Cheltenham, Torquay United, Bristol Rovers, and MK Dons.
