Super Eagles humbled! CHAN defending champions Senegal off to a bright start after defeating Nigeria in Group D opener

Christian Gomis grabbed the all-important goal as Senegal beat Nigeria 1-0 in an African Nations Championship match.

With 15 minutes remaining on the clock, Gomis struck to hand the Teranga Lions maximum points in this Group D opener.

It was a match where both teams were blunt in front of goal, but Senegal made the most of the glorious chance they got.  

Senegal are the CHAN defending champions and Tuesday's win set them on the path to win this competition again.  

Their triumph in the 2022 CHAN edition was their maiden CHAN title and they arrived at the current edition as one of the tournament favourites. 

Coached by Eric Chelle, who is also in charge of the first team, expectations have been high for Nigeria.

But they succumbed to Senegal, who might have sent a message about what to expect from them as the tournament progresses.

Up next for Senegal is a date with Congo Brazzaville next Tuesday as they seek to win again and boost their chances of reaching the knockout phase.

On the same day, Nigeria will come up against Sudan in a bid to recover from the Senegal setback.
