Mamelodi Sundowns failed to win their opening Premier Soccer League game after they were held by Chippa United to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Although they registered the opening goal in the first half, the Chilli Boys fought back and registered the equalising goal in the second half.
Meanwhile, after keeping Sundowns at bay for half an hour, Chippa capitulated in the 32nd minute when Arthur Sales scored. In a sleek team move, the Brazilians outmanoeuvred the Chilli Boys, with Tashreeq Matthews finally picking out Sales, who made no mistake as he slotted past Stanley Nwabali.
Matthews and Sales combined yet again in the 62nd minute and almost produced the second goal for the defending champions. However, after being spotted in a good position, Sales was unlucky as his goal was deflected out.
Sundowns were pegged back by Chippa when Mfecane, just signed from Cape Town Spurs, scored to equalise for the home side. With a precise, well-taken shot, Mfecane planted the ball into the bottom right corner, way beyond an outstretched Ronwen Williams.
Both Chippa and Sundowns now have a point from the entertaining game.
