South Africa stumble out the gate with defeat to Mozambique in opening Cosafa Cup Group A clash

For much of the first half, the hosts dominated possession and confidently moved the ball around in the final third, limiting Os Mambas’ attacking opportunities.

Despite their control and attacking intent, South Africa went into the break with the score still locked at 0-0. 

The second half followed a similar pattern, though Mozambique began to assert themselves more.

In the 74th minute, Antonio Sumbane capitalised on an opportunity to slot the ball into an empty net, going 1-0 up and eventually securing all three points for Os Mambas and topping Group A.

This year’s regional tournament offers South Africa a crucial opportunity not only to showcase and nurture emerging talent, but also to build greater squad depth and cohesion.

South Africa’s next challenge will be against Zimbabwe on Saturday, 7 June at 15h00. Coach Vela Khumalo’s team will then face Mauritius on Tuesday, 10 June.
