  • City under investigation for financial irregularities
  • Facing over 100 charges
  • Could face heavy punishment if found guilty
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester City have been accused of more than 100 breaches of financial rules by the Premier League and will likely face a hefty punishment if found guilty. Everton have just been hit with a 10-point deduction for breaking Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules, fuelling speculation City could also be deducted points or even be stripped of their titles.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

City have enjoyed a period of sustained success for over a decade, winning five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League. The punishment handed out to Everton suggests the Cityzens could face a sterner sanction if found guilty, while Chelsea will also be watching events closely amid speculation former owner Roman Abramovich breached FFP rules with a series of secret payments.

However, former Manchester City forward Shaun Wright-Phillips believes taking the team's titles away would not be a suitable punishment and also feels other clubs would not want to be awarded trophies that had not been won on the pitch.

  • WHAT WRIGHT-PHILLIPS SAID

“I don’t think it would be fair for Manchester City to be stripped of any of their previous honours should they be found guilty of any of the charges against them. It wouldn’t be fair, and I don’t think clubs would want to take those trophies off of City. They wouldn't feel like they rightfully deserved them," he told NewBettingOffers.co.uk.

"Regardless of what was happening off the pitch when these allegations first surfaced, the team still had to be managed and the players still had to perform in the way they did to win those titles. Whatever happens off the field shouldn’t take away from everything that the managers, players and fans did for the club. They are the reason why the club has won what they have."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN CITY?

City will be watching carefully to see what happens with Everton. The Toffees plan to appeal and will hope to have their points deduction reinstated. Meanwhile, there's still no definitive timetable regarding City's situation. The case has been referred to an independent commission but the saga is expected to drag on for some time yet.
