  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Amajiita goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe played a starring role as the South Africa U20 team won their historic U20 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Morocco in the final.

He ended up being crowned the Goalkeeper of the Tournament owing to his outstanding display throughout the competition.

The Portuguese-based custodian initially played for Ubuntu in Cape Town, but has expressed his interest in Kaizer Chiefs.

  • WHAT SMYTHE-LOWE SAID

"I supported Chiefs when I was younger, and it's a possibility [that I might join them] in the future," the teenager told the media.

"I left [South Africa] during the 2020 [Covid-19] pandemic when my mom had a sabbatical, so we decided to go [to Portugal] for a year and see if it'd work for us because we had been there in the past.

"To be honest, when I left, I wasn't thinking about professional football. I was just thinking about what's best for me and my family, and then obviously, if you put in the work, opportunities come. I didn't really have [playing professional football] in mind," Smythe Lowe concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chiefs have been struggling to get a reliable shot-stopper since the exit of Itumeleng Khune, who served the club for 25 years.

Brandon Petersen, Fiacre Ntwari, and Bruce Bvuma have not been delivering consistently. Chances are high that another high-profile custodian will be signed in the next transfer window.

Smythe-Lowe can be signed and sharpened in DDC before being introduced to the senior team; he might be what they need in the long term.

  • WHAT NEXT?

After his heroics in Egypt, obviously, teams are having a look at him, and Chiefs should act fast if they are interested in having him.

However, the main agenda will be beating Polokwane City in the Premier Soccer League game that will be played at the FNB Stadium.

A win will give them a ticket for the MTN8 next season.
