Marseille challenge Sunderland to West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd as Roberto De Zerbi targets further signings

According to Footmercato, Marseille are stepping up their pursuit of centre-back Aguerd as they continue to reshape their defence in the final days of the transfer window. The Moroccan international, who spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad and made 36 appearances, has also attracted attention from Sunderland. Despite Joel Ordonez remaining their top defensive target, OM are exploring Aguerd as a serious option to reinforce Roberto De Zerbi’s squad.

The 29-year-old's return to Ligue 1 would bring valuable experience and leadership to Marseille's back line. Aguerd has fond memories of French football from his time at Rennes, where he made over 70 appearances. West Ham, meanwhile, may be willing to sanction a move as they look to balance their squad.  Les Olympiens are determined to strengthen their defence after an inconsistent start, with sporting director Mehdi Benatia prioritising centre-back reinforcements.

Aguerd’s qualities extend beyond defensive solidity. Known for his aerial dominance and ability on set pieces, he could provide Marseille with both stability at the back and an attacking edge. The Moroccan boasts 55 caps for his country and played a key role during his time in Spain last season. Sunderland remain keen but face stiff competition from OM, who can offer the defender European football and the chance to play in a familiar league.

Marseille are expected to continue talks for both Ordonez and Aguerd in the coming days, with three to four more signings still planned before the window shuts. If the Ligue 1 giants push ahead, Aguerd could be unveiled as one of their headline defensive recruits, bringing De Zerbi the experienced leader he wants in his back line.
