  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Fabrizio Romano has reported that a final decision was made following a meeting this week between the club’s hierarchy and the player, marking the end of an eight-year stint at Old Trafford. Despite being a regular figure in the squad for several seasons, Lindelof has struggled for game time in recent years. The 2024–25 campaign has seen him make just five starts in the Premier League, due in large part to recurring injury problems and increased competition in the squad.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With Lindelof now available on a free transfer, clubs from both Spain and Italy have reportedly expressed strong interest in securing his services. While a final decision has not been made on his next destination, there is speculation that a reunion with his former club Benfica could be on the table.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Lindelof leaves United having made 283 appearances across all competitions. While his time in England has not been without its challenges, he has enjoyed moments of success, notably winning the FA Cup and EFL Cup with the club. However, he was also part of the teams that suffered heartbreaking defeats in two separate Europa League finals.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

Lindelof’s departure is believed to be the beginning of a larger squad shake-up as Ruben Amorim prepares to reshape the team after what has been a turbulent season. Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans, both out of contract, are also tipped to exit. United will reportedly listen to offers for several other players, including Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford — all of whom have failed to convince under the new regime. As United host Aston Villa this Sunday in their final game of the season, it’s expected that Lindelof will be given the opportunity to bid farewell to the Old Trafford faithful.
