South Africa kept alive their chances of making the CHAN quarter-finals after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Guinea in the Group C game staged at the Namboole Stadium in Uganda.

This was a massive result for Bafana Bafana, who had not beaten the National Elephants in the previous five attempts across all competitions, scoring no goal in the process.

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema did well to hold off his marker before converting Thabiso Kutumela's pass after 10 minutes.

The National Elephants responded in the 38th minute courtesy of Moussa Camara, with the assist coming from his skipper, Mohamed Bangoura.

In the 54th minute, Wayde Jooste set up former Orlando Pirates star Kutumela for Bafana Bafana's second goal.

Bafana Bafana are now on four points from two games, while Guinea have three from as many outings.

    THE MVP

Whether Masandawana regret letting Maema leave for Simba SC on loan or not is a tough question to answer right now, but the midfielder has underlined his worth.

On Monday, he was at the center of all Bafana goals; he scored the first, before initiating the second.

He controlled the midfield effectively against Guinea.

  • THE BIG LOSER

The National Elephants have every reason to blame themselves for the 2-1 loss against Bafana Bafana.

They had every chance, especially in the last 20 or so minutes, to get an equaliser and probably a winner, but failed to find the back of the net.

    WHAT COMES NEXT?

Bafana Bafana will now start preparations for their next fixture against Niger on Friday, a game they have to win to keep alive their hope of advancing.

For Guinea, their last fixture in Group C will be on the same day versus Algeria, who can't afford to drop more points after their 1-1 draw with South Africa in the last engagement.
