    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the departure of two of their first-team players, Rivaldo Coetzee and Lebohang Maboe.

The Premier Soccer League champions made the news public and thanked the duo for their achievements with the club over several seasons.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sundowns are yet to confirm their new players, which they are expected to do soon but have now released two of their players.

The release of Maboe and Coetzee is understood to mark the beginning of a shake-up in the playing unit, creating space for the expected new players.

Due to the competition at the Tshwane giants, Maboe joined SuperSport United on a short-term loan last season but has been released as his contract has expired.

On the other hand, Coetzee spent most of his time on the sidelines due to injury, which limited his participation in the campaign.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS?

After concluding their duties at the FIFA Club World Cup, the focus now is on the restructuring of the playing unit.

As was the case in the previous transfer windows, Sundowns are expected to be active as they hope to get players who can help them achieve their season targets.

Last season, they only managed to defend the PSL but fell short in the Nedbank Cup - they were eliminated in the semi-final by the eventual champions, Kaizer Chiefs, and in the CAF Champions League.

Their hope of winning a second continental star was dashed by Pyramids FC of Egypt, who won their first.
