Liverpool boss Arne Slot insists it's too early to say whether Reds are in Premier League title race despite strong start to season

With a 2-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, thanks to goals from Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah, the Reds have secured their fifth win in six matches, propelling them to the top of the league table. The only blemish on Liverpool’s otherwise solid start under Slot’s guidance was a defeat to Nottingham Forest two weeks ago.

Liverpool have also claimed victories in the Champions League and the Carabao Cup and their impressive performances have left fans optimistic about conquering England once again in 2025. However, Slot is determined to keep expectations grounded despite his team's impressive start to the Premier League season.

While the Liverpool boss is pleased with the team’s early form, he cautions that the true strength of the squad can only be measured halfway through the season when they have played every team at least once.

"Everyone is realistic enough; all the players understand that six games into the season doesn’t give you a realistic view on the league table," Slot told reporters.

"That is more like 19 games that you can feel, 'Right, where are we?’. But it helps if you get some good results, especially if you bring in a new manager and being a successor of such a successful one. Everybody understands that if we’d have lost four or five of these first six fixtures life would have been a bit different to how it is now."

There is a general consensus that the Premier League crown will likely go to either Manchester City or Arsenal but Slot is not bothered about public opinion.

“I don't mind if they underestimate or overestimate us,” he said. “The situation is Manchester City, I think, have taken 30 or more points from us in the last two seasons. So that is the situation as it is and we're trying to close that gap.

"We still have to prove that if we come across Arsenal, Newcastle, Chelsea and Aston Villa we can still be up there, with Champions League games included as well. I don’t think it’s necessary for me to convince the players of the challenges we still face. To play in the Champions League and then play Arsenal and Aston Villa and all the top teams we are going to face after the next international break. For us, there is a lot to prove, especially if you look at the season two years ago and it is almost completely the same group."

In just a few months at Anfield, Slot has managed to bring about promising changes. The Dutch manager will hope that each day his influence grows at Anfield as the Reds continue to fight for silverware on multiple fronts. Slot will lead his troops next against Bologna in the Champions League which will be followed by a trip to Selhurst Park on October 5 to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
