    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates legend Teko Modise has explained why his expected move to Kaizer Chiefs did not materialise.

Although he states that he would have preferred a move to Naturena, Bucs showed more determination to sign him, and that is why he ended up there.

He admits that the promise of a move to Chiefs, which eventually did not see the light of day, is the reason why he dislikes Amakhosi.

    WHAT MODISE SAID

"Irvin Khoza sold me the story of joining Orlando Pirates; it was an easy decision, but not because I can't say no. I could have gone to Chiefs if it (the opportunity) came earlier (than Pirates')," Modise said, as quoted by Soccer Laduma.

"After the first season of me playing in the Mvela (National First Division), Bobby (Motaung) called me personally and said, 'I want you to play for Chiefs,' and I said, 'I'm ready when you are,' but for five or six years, they (Chiefs) never came through. That's why I started disliking Chiefs," he added.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Although he did not move to Chiefs, he went on to shine with Pirates and later own Mamelodi Sundowns.

In his debut season with the Bucs, he was named the Premier Soccer League Footballer of the Year as well as the Safa Footballer of the Year.

In his second season, he was close to winning the league title, but SuperSport United pipped them on goal difference.

He was a gem and was also linked with a move to English clubs, including Aston Villa, Wigan, and even Manchester City.

However, he did not sign for a foreign club, as he decided to join Sundowns. He won the PSL title with the Brazilians in the 2013-14 season before he became an African champion when the Tshwane giants conquered the continent in 2016 by lifting the Caf Champions League.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MODISE?

The former Sundowns football ambassador has been working as a matchday pundit, but his fans would like to see whether he will change course and maybe become a coach.

His experience at club levels and even with Bafana are expected to have refined him to become a coach, but that is a venture he has not indicated he would be pursuing.
