    WHAT HAPPENED?

The Football Kenya Federation is said to have set their sights on appointing Benni McCarthy as coach of their senior national team.

This comes as the Bafana Bafana legend is currently jobless after leaving his role as Manchester United forwards coach last year.

While former Kenya internationals, including Elijah Onsika, want McCarthy to be hired by the FKF, another former Harambee Stars forward, Boniface Ambani, is not buying into the idea.

    WHAT AMBANI SAID

“When you talk of Benni McCarthy, I personally think it will be a tall order for him because he doesn't even know a single player from our team,” Ambani said as per KickOff.

"Should Benni come now, then he will be coming to first of all learn and study our players, as opposed to expecting so much from him."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While McCarthy has so far enjoyed his coaching career working with various clubs in South Africa and Europe, he is yet to work with a national team.

The former Bafana Bafana star is also seen as a future South Africa coach, especially after Hugo Broos hinted at leaving his current post after the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers or the tournament itself if his team makes it.

McCarthy has also revealed that since leaving Manchester United, he was interviewed by three Major League Soccer clubs but nothing materialised as he remains jobless.

    WHAT NEXT?

The postponement of the African Nations Championship by Caf has given Kenya more time to look for a new coach.

But they might want to appoint one as soon as possible ahead of the resumption of World Cup qualifiers in March with Harambee Stars sitting fourth in Group F with five points from four matches and crucial matches against Gambia and Gabon to be played.
