BackpagepixItumeleng Khune has voiced strong criticism of football agents, accusing them of disappearing once deals are signed and players are left to struggle.
The former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper revealed that after cutting ties with his agent, he noticed a positive change in his finances.
He stressed that they are only interested in taking their share, rather than genuinely supporting players' careers and well-being.
Speaking at the Nedbank Cup gala dinner ahead of the final, Khune urged current players to prioritise financial literacy.
He advised them to consult banks and professionals to manage their money wisely. According to the former Bafana captain, the lack of financial education is why many players suffer after retirement.
He believes players should take control of their futures early on.
Khune, who has not played since leaving Chiefs last season, is now using his voice to guide the next generation.
Backpage“I think it is very important because, as footballers, we tend to think we have football agents. I’m not meaning to downgrade them or speak ill of them, but towards the end of my career, I stopped having an agent,” said Khune as reported by Sportswire.
“I started seeing growth in my bank account. When I still had my agent, I thought they were doing their job. But all they did was come, you sign a three-year contract with a club, and you sign a two-year contract with them.
“They get their share and then completely forget about you. Not only you as a player, but they would also rather have five different goalkeepers playing for different teams but competing for one position. When a club approaches an agent looking for a goalkeeper, the agent has to choose from those five. Who will they select? They might respect all of us, but who do they take to a bigger club, and who do they leave behind or send to a smaller club?
Backpage“I feel like agents wasted my time, and if I had known this at a young age, I would be in a much better position now. Players often seek advice from agents, yet agents prioritise their own pockets over the players’ interests,” Khune continued.
“So, you are basically wasting your time. Instead, as I said, go to Nedbank or any bank, ask for an advisor, someone who will focus primarily on you and your finances and ensure that you don’t have sleepless nights when you retire.
“You will retire knowing that you are financially secure, and that is what Nedbank can offer to the current generation of players.”
BackpageKhune’s future remains unclear, as the veteran goalkeeper has yet to officially announce his retirement from professional football.
Having parted ways with Chiefs after nearly two decades, speculation continues about whether he will hang up his gloves or pursue a new chapter on the pitch.
For now, Khune has transitioned into a media role and is currently serving as a football analyst with SABC Sport.
His insights and presence in the studio suggest he is preparing for life after football, though he has not completely closed the door on playing.
Until a formal statement is made, fans and the football fraternity will continue to wonder what’s next for one of South Africa’s most iconic goalkeepers.
