    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates are involved in a close contest with Mamelodi Sundowns in the race for the Premier Soccer League title.

They are also participating in the Caf Champions League and will take a shot at the Nedbank Cup, having already won the MTN8.

Former Pirates star Hleza Mofedi feels the Soweto giants will benefit from spending time away from their PSL duties due to league postponements which allowed them to focus on Caf responsibilities.

    WHAT MOFEDI SAID

"It's a time of mixed feelings at Pirates, even though we've dropped crucial points, especially against Al Ahly, who came here looking for a draw," said Mofedi as per KickOff.

"As for Stade d'Abidjan, to be honest, we allowed them to escape without punishment.

"Right now, Pirates are relying on the same players for all their matches in Africa and in domestic football.

"The PSL's decision to postpone league matches has been beneficial for Pirates. Given the number of games they might have to play, they wouldn't be able to manage the schedule," added the former Buccaneers star.

“The squad simply wouldn't cope with the demands of playing week in and week out in both the Champions League and the domestic league.

"Thus, the PSL's postponement of domestic matches has aided Orlando Pirates. I don't want to add pressure on the players, it’s evident they have been inconsistent in their performances. However, I believe they will reach the semi-finals."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The current season provides a test for Pirates coach Jose Riveiro and his men to see if they can manage to balance domestic and continental duties.

They are chasing success in the PSL where Mamelodi Sundowns are their biggest challenger.

Pirates also have Al Ahly as their strong competitor for a knockout spot in the Caf Champions League Group C.

It is also a test for the Buccaneers to see if they have enough depth to last them the season without complaining about fatigue from participating in demanding fixtures.
