    The Blues have been plunged into crisis ahead of the start of the new Premier League season, after Fernandez was seen singing an alleged racist song with his Argentina team-mates after their Copa America win. The video has left Chelsea players furious, with Wesley Fofana branding the chants as "uninhibited racism." Chelsea have now issued a statement and confirmed they have opened disciplinary proceedings.

    A statement from the club read: "Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable. We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome. We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate. The Club has instigated an internal disciplinary procedure."

    Fernandez has since apologised for his actions in a post on social media. The midfielder said he was "caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations" and insisted the words "do not reflect my character or beliefs." However, Fernandez is now facing disciplinary action from Chelsea, while the French Football Federation has also vowed to take legal action.

    Chelsea are back in pre-season under new manager Enzo Maresca and due to head off to the United States for a pre-season tour at the end of July. It remains to be seen if any action will be taken against Fernandez or how he will be received by his team-mates when he returns to Stamford Bridge.
