    Chiefs advance

Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup after beating Kabuscorp 5-4 in the post-match penalties after winning 1-0 in regulation time on Saturday.

Gaston Sirino, Reeve Frosler, Thabo Cele, Flavio Silva, and Aden McCarthy scored the post-match penalty kicks to ensure Amakhosi advance and the Angolan outfit is eliminated.

Meanwhile, given how they started and played across the first half, Chiefs were very much determined to get the job done. The Soweto giants almost grabbed an opener in the 17th minute, but Kabuscorp goalkeeper Anselmo Mweni denied Pule Mmodi.

Bradley Cross had an opportunity to score for Amakhosi, but he ended up sending his effort just over the crossbar from close range in the 34th minute. Glody Lilepo hit the side netting in the 38th minute as the host pressed, looking for a goal.

In the 40th minute, the hard-fighting Chiefs thought that they had scored, only for Mmodi's goal to be ruled out for offside.

However, in the 41st minute, the Glamour Boys finally found the back of the net. Dillon Solomons drove from the midfield and launched a ferocious strike that the goalkeeper spilt on the path of Lilepo. From a tight corner on the right wing, the DR Congo forward managed to fire into the net, beating an already stretched Mweni.

Amakhosi registered two quick chances just after the hour mark; however, the first one was wasted by Flavio Silva in the 62nd minute before Mduduzi Shabalala wasted another in the 64th minute.

The tie ended in a 1-1 draw on aggregate and a penalty shootout decided the game.

    THE MVP

Although he was tested occasionally in the match, Petersen made a save in the shootout as Chiefs held their nerves to advance.

    THE BIG LOSER

After beating Chiefs at home in the first leg despite being numerically disadvantaged, this time around, they could not finish the job.

The Angolan outfit looked disjointed and allowed Amakhosi to launch attacks from various points; the backline exposed their goalkeeper, who was tested on many occasions, and eventually, their continental journey came to an end.

  • WHAT COMES NEXT?

Chiefs will be up against AmaZulu on October 1 in a Premier Soccer League game, while Kabuscorp will play Luanda City in a domestic competition on October 3.
