Fans in Africa feel Qatar are on course to beating South Africa’s unwanted record of the worst World Cup hosts following their 2-0 defeat to Ecuador in Sunday’s opening match.
The Asian nation became the first hosts to lose the opening match of a World Cup but supporters on the continent feel they stand no chance of overcoming the Netherlands and Senegal, their next group opponents, which would see them do worse than South Africa 12 years ago.
Bafana Bafana started their campaign in the 2010 tournament with a 1-1 draw against Mexico before losing 3-0 to Uruguay but missed out on the Round of 16 only on goal difference after beating France 2-1 in their final group match.
