Bafana Bafana: The nine players Ntseki replaced for the Zambia clash

13:34 SAST 2019/08/23
Ramahlwe Mphahlele and George Maluleka - Kaizer Chiefs August 7 2019
The coach made nine changes to the Bafana Bafana squad which participated at the Afcon 2019 finals

  • Kaizer Chiefs, Bruce Bvuma

    Bruce Bvuma - Kaizer Chiefs

Bvuma was Bafana's third-choice goalkeeper at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals, and he has been replaced by Brendon Petersen from Bidvest Wits
  • Ramahlwe Mphahlele Bafana Bafana v Libya, September 2018

    Ramahlwe Mphahlele - Kaizer Chiefs

Mphahlele's inclusion in the final squad for the Afcon 2019 tournament was met with criticism from a section of Bafana Bafana fans, and Ntseki has decided to give Thapelo Morena a chance this time around.
  • Kaizer Chiefs, Daniel Cardoso, December 2018

    Daniel Cardoso - Kaizer Chiefs

There's little Cardoso offered Bafana in Egypt as he never featured in any of the team's five matches. Rightfully so, Ntseki saw the need to give someone else a chance in his place, and that player is Erick Mathoho.
  • Sfiso Hlanti

    Sifiso Hlanti - Bidvest Wits

A surprise omission given Hlanti was one of Bafana's best performers at the tournament. Perhaps, Ntseki wants to see what other players such as Thato Mokeke and Innocent Maela can offer in the left-back position.
  • Hlompho Kekana, Mamelodi Sundowns

    Hlompho Kekana - Mamelodi Sundowns

The Sundowns skipper has played more games than the majority of his club teammates as well as those in the current squad in recent months. At 34, Kekana deserves the break simply because the nation knows what he is capable of as a player and a leader in any team.
  • Max Gradel Ivory Coast Themba Zwane South Africa

    Themba Zwane - Mamelodi Sundowns

The attacking midfielder hasn't looked back since his return from Afcon, but Ntseki felt he will not be needed for the encounter against Zambia.
  • Tiyani Mabunda and Lebohang Maboe, Bafana Bafana

    Tiyani Mabunda - Mamelodi Sundowns

Mabunda was part of the squad for the continental showpiece, but he has been dropped this time around. This could be because he has been used sparingly at Sundowns this season.
  • South Africa v Namibia Sibusiso Vilakazi - June 2019

    Sibusiso Vilakazi - Mamelodi Sundowns

Vilakazi has made way for Dolly, who missed out on Afcon 2019 due to injury. Perhaps Ntseki is looking to widen the pool of players he could choose from for Afcon 2021 qualifiers which gets underway in November.
  • Lars Veldwijk - Ivory Coast v South Africa, June 2019

    Lars Veldwijk - Sparta Rotterdam

The lanky striker may have scored two goals in three games this season, but there is little he has done at national team level since making his debut. His place has been taken by Kermit Erasmus, who was overlooked by Stuart Baxter in the previous squads.
