The 23-year-old marked his presence on the scoresheet during his team's English Premier League fixture, albeit in a 3-2 defeat against Aston Villa on Saturday, December 30.&nbsp; Foster’s presence for his club continues to raise questions, as he has been considered unfit by Burnley's medical staff due to mental health struggles experienced two months ago.&nbsp; Despite this, he continues to participate in matches for the team but has been ruled out from representing Bafana Bafana in the upcoming Afcon tournament.

On Thursday, December 28, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos unveiled his final <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/big-names-dropped-as-hugo-broos-announces-final-bafana-bafana-squad-for-2023-afcon-finals/bltba38e1964594abc4" target="_blank">23-man squad</a>, conspicuously excluding Foster. When <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/foster-afcon-saga-broos-striker-surprised-play-for-burnley/bltb5abb55a1c338289" target="_blank">questioned about the omission</a>, Broos disclosed that, despite Burnley’s explanation, Foster personally penned a letter to Safa, clarifying his choice not to participate in Afcon due to his mental health concerns.

Broos further expressed his bewilderment at the situation where a player considered unfit can still participate at the club level but is unavailable for the national team. Despite this ongoing situation, Broos has redirected his attention from Foster and placed trust in Orlando Pirates duo Zakhele Lepasa and Evidence Makgopa, along with Polokwane City attacker Oswin Appollis, to step up to the challenge for Bafana during the continental tournament.

While Foster won't be present in Ivory Coast, he appears poised to continue representing his club as league action unfolds.&nbsp; Conversely, South Africa are scheduled to kick off their first Afcon match on January 16 against Mali, followed by matches against Namibia and Tunisia.
