Asante Kotoko are the 2025 winners of the Toyota Cup after beating Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 in the penalty shootout at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
After a goalless draw in regulation time, the winner of the cup had to be decided from the spot kicks, where the Ghanaian outfit outsmarted the Glamour Boys.
While Gaston Sirino and Mduduzi Shabalala scored their penalties, Wandile Duba, Aden McCarthy, Pule Mmodi, and Inacio Miguel missed.
Henry Ansu, Albert Amoah, and Johnson scored for Kotoko, while Lord Amoah, Asiedu, and Samba O'Niel missed.
Meanwhile, after failing to find some good space to test the Kotoko goalkeeper, Chiefs forward Glody Lilepo attempted a long-range shot, but Mohammed Camara was equal to the challenge as he collected the ball with ease in the 12th minute.
Moments after they had their goalkeeper tested, Kotoko attacked and almost got an equaliser, but a good save by Brandon Petersen saved the day for Chiefs. The goalkeeper tipped the ball over the bar when Kwame Opoku, after connecting to Emmanuel Antwi's cross, headed towards the goal.
Fabio Silva had a good chance to break the deadlock in the 28th minute, but the new signing headed wide from a promising position.
After moments of consistent attacks by Chiefs, the Soweto giants were unlucky when their effort was not deservedly rewarded in the 56th minute. A long-range shot by Pule Mmode hit the crossbar with Camara well beaten, but Amakhosi were unlucky not to break the deadlock at that point.
The hard-working Mmodi won Amakhosi a penalty in the 83rd minute, but Inacio Miguel, who scored a penalty rebound during the pre-season against FC Twente, missed as he sent his effort wide.
BackpageTHE MVP
Camara deserves the MVP recognition because of his saves in the game and in the penalty shootout.
BackpageTHE BIG LOSER
Miguel had a chance to win the game for Chiefs, but the designated penalty taker could not successfully convert a late second-half penalty.
He also missed his spot kick during the shootout.
Kaizer ChiefsWHAT COMES NEXT?
After the Toyota Cup showdown, both Kotoko and Chiefs shift focus to their additional pre-season engagements.
For Amakhosi, they have more time to prepare for the 2025/26 season since they will not be part of the MTN8 campaign early in August.
