Newcastle United achieved their Champions League dream last season, having secured their place in Europe’s elite competition for the first time in 20 years. The Magpies are undoubtedly ahead of schedule and few could have envisaged them qualifying for the Champions League at the start of the campaign.

This remarkable success on the pitch can largely be attributed to the miracle work of manager Eddie Howe, who has transformed the Magpies from a team struggling for survival in the Premier League to one that is flying high at the very top of the division.

The return of European football to St. James Park brings a great sense of optimism to the Toon supporters. However, the competition places additional demands on the squad in terms of matches.

    New signings summer window

    After qualifying for the Champions League last season, the Toon have reinforced their squad significantly this past summer. Their successes would helped to convince Sandro Tonali to leave boyhood club AC Milan in favour of a big-money blockbuster move to Tyneside.

    The Toon forked out £32m to secure the services of 20-year-old right-back Tino Livramento, who is seen as a long-term replacement for Kieran Trippier. Eddie Howe has also strengthened at left-back, with Chelsea's 18-year-old Lewis Hall joining on loan. Newcastle have an obligation to buy the youngster at the end of the season for a reported £28m.

    Harvey Barnes has arrived from Leicester City in a £39m move to add goals and assists from wide areas. Newcastle are are also keen on spotting up-and-coming raw talent and quickly snapping them up, as shown by the captures of Yankuba Minteh

    Departures summer window

    In terms of exits, only three players sold for an actual fee. Fans favourite Allan Saint-Maximin joined Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, Karl Darlow was sold to Leeds and Chris Wood to Nottingham Forest.
