SuperSport United sign Ubuntu Cape Town FC defender Luke Fleurs

Ubuntu Cape Town FC’s young Amajita defender Luke Fleurs, will be joining SuperSport United on a long-term deal, after the two clubs and player have agreed terms.  

Fleurs is a product of the Ubuntu Football Academy and their partner club Fish Hoek AFC, having joined the club in 2013.  

He made his debut for Ubuntu Cape Town in the National First Division last August - just 17 years old at the time - and went on to be a top performer in both the NFD and in an impressive Nedbank Cup run, where Fleurs shone against PSL clubs Polokwane City and Free State Stars.

The youngster from Mitchells Plain was part of the national U17 team in 2016, starting all 13 Amajimbos matches that year, and has recently been part of Thabo Senong’s U20 squad for the qualifiers against Mozambique.   

If he continues to grow and perform the way he has over the past season, it is a matter of time before senior honours come his way, and he has set his sights on establishing himself in the Supersport United PSL team as the next step on that journey.

“I am excited for this new challenge, because it was always my dream to play in the PSL, and especially to play alongside players like Morgan Gould and Clayton Daniels who I’ve looked up to as a youth player,” the young defender said.  

“My time at Ubuntu has been a really good experience for the past six years, and they have done a lot for me, providing a quality school and football education and especially keeping me on the right road.  

“Ubuntu is about more than football, and they have challenged me to live well and to be a leader, which I hope to live up to.  I can only thank God, the Ubuntu family, and of course the Fleurs family, for all they have done to make this possible for me, and Supersport United for believing in me too,”

Ubuntu Cape Town FC CEO, Michael Jenkins, believes that Fleurs is ready for PSL football, and that he’s a player with an exciting future.

“Luke has been exceptional this season, and most importantly, his mindset and determination match his obvious talent, which is what will set him apart and see him achieve his potential at the very highest level over the next few years.

“We’ve been proud to be a part of his journey since he joined us as a 12 year old; we’re excited to see him take this next step with Supersport, and I have no doubt he will excel in the PSL, and hopefully eventually open doors to European football, which I know he aspires to.  

“Ubuntu Cape Town FC really exists to help gifted young players like Luke to make a great start on their professional football journey and equip them to move successfully to the next level, so we will miss Luke, but we’re delighted to let him go!  We like to say that players may leave our football club but will always be part of our family.”

Supersport United CEO, Stan Matthews, believes that the club has invested in one of the most exciting young prospects in South Africa.

“We’ve been watching Luke extensively, he is an exciting player who despite his being so young, he has every chance of playing in the first team next season," he said. 

“At Supersport United Luke will compete with, and learn from, some exceptionally experienced pros like Morgan Gould and Clayton Daniels, which I think is the perfect opportunity for him," concluded Matthews.
