Reports: Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela could go to South America on trial

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela could be heading for a trial to South America if reports are to be believed.

The veteran full-back was recently released by Amakhosi following another injury ravaged campaign where he saw his game time severely limited.

This subsequently led to the 33-year-old falling down the pecking order at Naturena and with Philani Zulu cementing his place as the club’s first choice left-back, Masilela was eventually deemed surplus to requirements and was released alongside several others.

This has led to much speculation surrounding the future of the former Getafe in Spain defender, who has been linked with a move to the United States of America in recent times.

However, the latest reports doing the rounds suggest that Masilela may be heading to South America for a trial.

According to sources close to the Isolezwe publication, Masilela’s agent Mike Makaab is urging the player to have one final crack abroad, despite him reportedly having other local Premier Soccer League (PSL) offers on the table.

“Makaab wants Masilela to play in South America,” a source told Isolezwe.

“A few Absa Premiership sides are interested in signing him. Most of them are in Joburg, but Makaab wants him to go try his luck overseas,” he added.

It now remains to be seen whether or not the former Bafana Bafana stalwart will take up the offer or choose to remain in South Africa as he reaches the twilight of his career.

Masilela though, is no stranger to plying his trade abroad having spent time in La Liga and with Maccabi Haifa in Israel prior to joining Chiefs.

But the jury will be out if Masilela can replicate the form which saw him shoot to stardom as one of SA’s best defenders as he only managed four appearances for the Glamour Boys last season in the league.
