BET.co.za: Winner takes all in South Africa’s most lucrative cup competition

Can Eric Tinkler get one over his former employers?

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy, is no stranger to success winning 14 major trophies as a player including the UEFA Champions League. The ex FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers man now stands on the cusp of trophy glory for the first time as a manager. Standing in his way is an old friend and ex Bafana teammate Eric Tinkler, who will sit in the dugout for Supersport United.

Cape Town City’s arrival in the PSL last year has already brought with it success, after the Mother City side won the 2016 Telkom Knockout in their maiden campaign in the PSL. Extra spice is added by the fact that Supersport coach Tinkler, just departed his post as Cape Town City boss and should know his former side very well after leading City to cup glory last season.

Cape Town City FC vs Supersport United

Moses Mabhida Stadium

14 October 2017

Kickoff at 19:00 (GMT + 2)

Key men & What to expect

The MTN8 final was in jeopardy of being postponed because of recent floods in Durban, but organisers have given it the green light. 25 000 supporters are expected to pack into Moses Mabhida stadium to witness the first piece of silverware being handed out in South Africa this season.

A tight encounter is expected between two sides noted for their counter attacking prowess and reliance on set pieces.

Cape Town City captain Robyn Johannes, brings vast experience to McCarthy’s backline and he will be a key figure when they defend the danger posed by Supersport’s set piece deliveries. Ayanda Patosi, a veteran of Belgian top flight football for 6 years with Lokeren, will be McCarthy’s go-to man on the counter attack with his pace and trickery from the left flank.

Tinkler’s Supersport United side will rely heavily on Reneilwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane to break up Cape Town City’s rhythm with his tough tackling and positional intelligence. The ex Chiefs hard man has been capped 50 times for South Africa and his big match temperament could be crucial in the final. Fellow Bafana star Thuso Phala, will be Supersport’s outlet on the right flank as he attempts to trouble City’s fullbacks with his ability to whip in dangerous crosses.

A draw after 90 minutes is incredibly well priced at 2.15 on BET.co.za
