    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs have played their first three Premier Soccer League matches of the 2025/26 season without head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

The Tunisian was back in his home country to attend to his wife following what was called "a serious accident," leaving assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef in charge of the team together with Cedric Kaze.

In the three games Amakhosi have played in the absence of Nabi, they have posted a 100 percent winning record.

Former Orlando Pirates attacker Benedic Vilakazi has commented on why he thinks Chiefs might have done well without their head coach.

    WHAT VILAKAZI SAID

"You know, it's a tricky one. You can find that maybe with coach Nabi, the problem is the message across to the players," Vilakazi said as per KickOff.

"Maybe the message across to the players creates an uncomfortable situation for players.

"Because there are situations where I can't approach the coach to tell him how I feel, but I can talk to the assistant coach, and he will understand how I feel, and he'll be with me in the whole process in terms of how I'm feeling."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nabi has returned just in time for Chiefs' PSL hosting of Mamelodi Sundowns at  FNB Stadium on Wednesday.

The former Young Africans coach will be under scrutiny to see if he will continue with the plausible work done by his assistants when he was away.

Amakhosi face a wounded Sundowns reeling from the MTN8 exit, and Nabi would like to avoid leading the Soweto giants to the last season's trend, where they struggled for consistency.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

Amakhosi are finalising their preparations for the Sundowns match, and in-form defender Aden McCarthy is racing against time to regain fitness ahead of this game.

Bradley Cross and Nkanyiso Shinga were also "sick" but could recover to take part in the showdown, while new signing Etiosa Ighodaro was injured at training and is also yet to get his documentation in place.
