    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns have opted against extending the contract of Sipho Mbule who spent last season on loan at Sekhukhune United.

The central midfielder has for long been linked with Kaizer Chiefs who are keen on beefing up their squad with quality players.

But reported off-field problems have dogged Mbule and former Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana acknowledges it would not be easy for any club to sign the linkman.

    WHAT KEKANA SAID

"You have got to be very brave to sign Sipho now," Kekana said as per KickOff.

"But with the talent alone, you are guaranteed that you are going to enjoy, you are going to win football matches because he is talented like that.

"Outside football, as the coach, he is going to need some help."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Being a free agent makes signing a talented player like Mbule good transfer business.

But his off-pitch troubles, confirmed by Sekhukhune defender and former teammate Daniel Cardoso, might deter clubs that might be interested in him.

Chiefs were said to be after his signature, but it might need coach Nasreddine Nabi to be a strict disciplinarian when handling the former SuperSport United midfielder.

The Soweto giants have had unconvincing central midfielders, and if signed, Mbule would have to contend with the likes of Yusuf Maart, Edson Castillo, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Samkelo Zwane.

    WHAT NEXT?

It is still early into the off-season break and there haven't been too many player movements so far.

But the upcoming weeks could see Mbule's future being confirmed.
