Vincent Kompany reveals how long he will compete with Harry Kane & Co in Bayern Munich training – with ex-Man City defender still ‘the best option’ in coaching team

The ex-Manchester City defender may have enough coaching experience under his belt to have been entrusted with the task of overseeing events at the Allianz Arena, but he is still only 38 years of age and a little under a month younger than first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

With that in mind, and with the injury struggles that brought an end to his career now a thing of the past, Kompany has taken to getting involved with certain exercises in training. He believes that he has what it takes to test the likes of England captain Kane – who has mastered the art of bamboozling opposition defenders.

There are no plans for Kompany to take a back seat any time soon, with the Belgian telling FIFA’s official website of why he is happy to blur the lines between tactician and player: “So, there is a story behind it as well. Let’s put it this way, from all the staff members, I think I’m still the fittest and the best option to add to the training session whenever we lack an extra player. So, it keeps me a little bit fit as well and, at the same time, it’s always nice to connect with the players in a different way. I can still do it for a couple of years, so I’m going to keep doing it.

“It doesn’t happen every week, maybe once every month or so. We have a wonderful media team, who don’t miss a single moment. And they highlighted a couple of my best bits and cut out a couple of my worst bits! I can show it to my children every now and then and say, ‘You see, your dad was a good player!’”

Kompany is having to do all he can at present to ensure that Bayern’s results keep his head off the chopping block. There has been talk of his tenure being brought to a close after just one season, with those rumours doing the rounds despite Bayern boasting an eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table.
